"Agriculture occupies around 44% of the arable land area in Mauritius. It is the objective of the Ministry to maintain and ensure development of the agro industry. A drought in 1999 had severe effects on the Sugar Cane yield, prior to this the crop accounted for around 25% of export earnings.

The Ministry continues to develop the agricultural economy by focusing on safety, supply, quality, innovation and new technology through Mauritius' service providing institutions, and with stakeholders of the region.

The six main Departments/Units of the Ministry are:
